The real question about Bitcoin is no longer whether it's an asset. That debate is settled. The harder question is this: What can over 1 trillion dollars of idle BTC actually do? Stacks is trying to answer that by bringing staking to Bitcoin. The design is refreshingly clean. BTC stays on Layer 1, fully self-custodied. No bridges, no wrapped tokens, no third-party custodians. Users just need to pair a small amount of STX alongside their BTC. Rewards come from Bitcoin miners generating yield, not from token inflation. The whitepaper essentially positions STX as a capacity asset for BTC yield. More Bitcoin in the system means more STX needed to pair with it. This is a bigger thesis than it seems. ETH staking turned Ethereum into productive capital and reshaped DeFi around stETH. Stacks is trying to bring that same defining moment to Bitcoin. We're still early. There are real risks around launch timing, execution, and adoption. But this is one of the most serious BTCfi designs I've seen, because it starts with self-custody, not with wrapping and bridging.
