Cutting a gap in the Himalayas—can it really save India from extreme heat? Temperatures in many parts of India are soaring close to 50°C, with extreme heatwaves relentlessly ravaging the land, causing cracked soil and water shortages. The intense heat is severely disrupting normal life. Facing record-breaking temperatures year after year, many have proposed a bold idea: if a tunnel or gap could be blasted through the towering Himalayas to bring in cold air from the north, could it completely dispel the heatwave? The idea sounds simple and appealing, but reality is far more complex. This plan is not only unfeasible but could also trigger unpredictable and massive disasters. First, from a geographical perspective, the Himalayas average over 6000 meters in elevation, with thick mountain massifs and extremely complex geological structures, including glaciers, permafrost, and fault zones. Creating a gap large enough to alter the climate over a wide area is an engineering challenge of world-class difficulty. Moreover, the region is geologically active; forced excavation could easily trigger earthquakes, avalanches, and landslides, putting surrounding areas in grave danger. The project itself is not practically implementable. Second, even if cost were no object and a passage was forcibly created, it would not change South Asia’s climate pattern. The Himalayas block not only cold air but also high-altitude atmospheric circulation. If the dry, cold northern air were to rush in, it wouldn’t simply cool things down; it would completely disrupt the South Asian monsoon system. The summer rainfall that local life depends on mainly comes from the southwest monsoon. Once airflow is disturbed, rainfall distribution would become severely unbalanced. Rainy plains could face prolonged droughts, while some areas might suffer abnormal heavy rains and floods. Alternating droughts and floods would be even deadlier than the heat. More importantly, India’s extreme heat is never caused by a single terrain factor. Rampant deforestation has sharply reduced forests, removing natural cooling barriers; vast wetlands have been reclaimed, breaking regional water cycles; severe overpopulation has led to resource depletion and environmental pollution. These layers of problems have intensified the heat. The mountains are merely a "wall" trapping heat; the real root cause is long-term ecological destruction. Even if this wall were opened, without ecological restoration, environmental degradation would return. Relying on blasting mountains to bring in cool air is ultimately a superficial and ineffective fantasy. The solution to extreme heat has never been to reshape mountains but to restore ecosystems and plan wisely. Attempting to change natural climate through grand engineering projects will only backfire in the end.
